Sacred Thread

Scared Thread
A sacred thread, a small sliver of the Divine woven into the world, symbolizing the Holy in our lives. With eyes and heart full of awareness and contemplation, sacred threads are interlaced into our daily activities and mundane commitments if one chooses only to see. Sacred threads can be traced throughout all aspects of life, even the simple activity of watching a movie. The Peanut Butter Falcon, a movie released in 2019, offers a tapestry of sacred threads woven into the plot, character dynamics, and setting of the film. This movie centers around the journey of a young man with Down Syndrome who desires to be a pro wrestler. The whispers of the Divine heard in this movie revolve around the themes of freedom, friendship, and love. 
            Zak, a 22-year-old with Down Syndrome, desires to be a pro wrestler and escapes the confines of his residency at a nursing home to pursue this dream. Zak’s escape and desire for freedom embodies the wish for freedom that all humans desire. Human nature seems to require some form of entrapment and confinement of self which human’s respond to by longing for freedom from that repression. Humans desire to live in freedom as authentic beings. God desires that for people as well. God desires people to experience freedom through Him by cultivating and transforming human’s truest self with His love. Zak displayed his wish for freedom and authenticity by escaping the nursing home which was limiting him and seeking his dream of becoming a pro wrestler.  
            Zak escapes the nursing home with the help of friends and begins his journey to find his hero, pro wrestler The Saltwater Redneck. Along the journey, Zak meets Tyler. Tyler is a young man suffering from pain and grief who is on the run trying to escape the law. Tyler, carrying a rough and tough exterior, softens toward Zak and a friendship begins to form. The friendship between the two men signify the beginnings of another sacred thread. The two men, despite all their differences, journey together towards the promise of their individual freedom. Tyler sees Zak as an equal, a human, full of capability despite Zak’s disability of Down Syndrome. This is a new experience for Zak because his life has been limited by the label of his disability. Tyler encourages Zak to pursue his dream and aids Zak in helping him train to be a pro wrestler. The friendship developed in the movie was heartwarming to watch, delivering a range of emotion to the audience. God blesses humanity with community and friendship which have the ability to be sacred. Friends can call out and name unique gifts within one’s self that are hidden from one’s consciousness. Friends can encourage and walk alongside each other through the journey of life. Friends provide new experiences, insights, and opinions that offer opportunities to learn and grow from. One of the greatest blessings of friendship is the presence of a true friend in an hour of need. True friendship allows the whole self to be seen and loved, even the ugly parts of self that are full of shame and wish to be hidden. A true friend witnesses the entirety of self and still chooses to love. God craves for people to have the bonds of true friendship with each other because woven into the bonds of friendship is God Himself, reflecting the love, pride, and joy He has for all humanity. 
            Through Tyler and Zak’s journey, love is born through their friendship. They protect each other and fight for their pursuit of freedom. Zak perceives that Tyler is a good person and gently helps Tyler realize that about himself. Tyler seeks The Saltwater Redneck so Zak’s dream can become a reality and Zak experiences the mat of pro wrestling. The two men become bonded for life on their journey. This progression illustrates the natural process that happens as human’s journey together through life. Bonds of friendship are created through people and events as love is born through relationship. This love from God changes humans, transforming them, heals them. This love reveals the path back to wholeness and peace, generating more space for God to enter into the world. Love represents the essence of the Christian journey and it can be seen in the friendship of Zak and Tyler. 
            Sacred threads are sewn into all aspects of life, one must just have the eyes to see and sense their wisdom. Reflecting and searching for sacred threads enhance one’s life, creating richer experiences and opportunities for awareness. A simple task, watching a movie, has the protentional to reveal more of the Divine if one is only willing to search for the threads, the sacred threads, that are woven into life.

Retreat in the Pines

This weekend I traveled to meet a friend at a retreat center for a weekend of yoga. The retreat was set off a dirt road surrounded by tall pine trees. Patagonia For years my husband and I have wanted to travel to Patagonia. The landscape looked breathtaking and every time Patagonia was mentioned people would buzz with excitement and desire to visit. So 2019 was the year we committed to go, no matter what. The cost was extremely more expensive than our other trips and we had to book our trip in the spring to secure our place in the busy season of Patagonia's summer. As the trip approached in December, the anticipation was put to the side as family commitments, holiday craziness, and our jobs took precedent. A week before our journey I developed shingles. At 30 years old, this was surprising and worrisome for our backpacking trip but nothing was going to stop this trip. My Spiritual Autobiography

The candle is lit, surrounding the room with the warm smell of white pumpkin. The chair squeaks as I settle at the table, breathing deeply, opening my heart to the Divine. I surrender to this familiar rhythm, anticipation building at the new awareness I am about to receive.
